Food News: Dempsey's Food & Spirits owner dies; The Beeline sets grand opening

Mark Dempsey, the owner of the bipartisan political hangout Dempsey’s Food & Spirits, died Friday, Jan. 10, at Grant Medical Center after suffering two heart attacks in December. He was 55. A Columbus native, Dempsey opened the Downtown restaurant and bar at 346 S. High St. on March 12, 2012, across from the Franklin County Courthouse.

Easton Town Center’s drinking and dining options continue to grow. The shopping center’s new 3,000-square-foot bar, The Beeline, will kick off its grand opening on Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. Located at 3989 Merchants Row, The Beeline is owned by Four Entertainment Group, a Cincinnati group that operates more than 20 bars and restaurants.

We have more information about the plant-based restaurant filling the space most recently occupied by The Angry Baker in Olde Towne East. Lifestyle Café (891 Oak St.) officially opens to the public at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18. A group of African-American entrepreneurs, including Dawn Dickson, Mo Wright, Derrick Clay and Daniel Kennedy, have come together to launch the café, which is led by chef Shanna Dean, a personal chef and caterer who graduated in culinary arts from the Columbus-based Bradford School. Lifestyle’s current menu items include sliders, chik'n and gluten-free waffles, eggless soufflé, kale salad and sweet potatoes. The café’s regular hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for weekend brunch.

Zaftig Brew Pub in Italian Village has introduced a brunch menu, served 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The menu includes latkes, chicken and waffles, a B.E.L.T. sandwich, a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar and, of course, Zaftig beer on draft.
