Food News: Gordon Biersch departs Arena District; One Line debuts in Franklinton

Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant abruptly closed last weekend as its owner, Craftworks Holdings LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Gordon Biersch, which opened in January 2001 at 401 N. Front St., was one of the Arena District’s original tenants and one of Central Ohio’s oldest brewpubs. The Arena District now has two big retail holes to fill, including Gordon Biersch’s onetime neighbor,The Three-Legged Mare, which closed last fall.

One Line Coffee is now serving its signature coffees and espresso drinks from a new shop at the River & Rich development in Franklinton (471 W. Rich St.). In addition, the new spot serves beer, wine and small plates made in-house. This is the third location for One Line, including coffee shops in the Short North and Downtown.

Pierogi Mountain announced yesterday on social media that Monday, March 23, will be its last day at 739 S. Third St. in German Village. According to a Facebook post, the pierogi eatery already had plans in the works to relocate, and its original location inside Cafe Bourbon Street will remain open. Since 2019, Pierogi Mountain has operated the kitchen inside Wunderbar, formerly home to the original Max & Erma’s. Wunderbar, which shares the building with the Kollektiv coworking space, came under fire in recent months for noise complaints, and in February the bar was forced to end all live entertainment in order to comply with city zoning code.

CloudKitchens, the secretive “ghost kitchen” startup founded by ex-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, plans to add a commercial kitchen space in the Short North. Reached by email, a representative from the company declined to provide a timeline or exact address. With the rise of delivery apps such as UberEats and DoorDash, virtual kitchens have started surging around the U.S., and CloudKitchens is just the latest entry into Central Ohio. Indianapolis-based ClusterTruck launched a delivery-only restaurant here in 2017, and the owners of Matt and Tony’s Wood Fired Kitchen kicked off a delivery-only commercial space this week. CloudKitchens is currently seeking local restaurant partners interested in renting kitchen space.

Meanwhile, the California-based startup Kitchen United has dropped plans to launch a virtual restaurant this spring in Grandview. The company announced last year that it planned to open a ghost kitchen at 1471-1481 W. Goodale Blvd. Reached last week by phone, a Kitchen United representative said the Grandview commercial space was deemed too large and the area around it not densely populated enough. Kitchen United, which has kitchens in Pasadena, Chicago and Scottsdale, Arizona, is still considering other locations around Columbus. 

Nancy’s Home Cooking will end its run this weekend at 3133 N. High St. Owner Rick Hahn had previously announced the closure on Facebook. The diner’s last day of service in Clintonville will be Sunday, March 8, when Hahn plans to serve only coffee, soft drinks and cake from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nancy’s is planning to relocate this spring to 52 E. Lynn St., previously home to Jack’s Downtown Diner.
