Event Spotlight: Camp Lazarus Maple Syrup Festival
If pancakes are a weekend tradition at your house, consider taking the meal to the next level by adding hand-crafted syrup courtesy of Camp Lazarus.
Families are invited to the Boy Scouts of America camp, located in Delaware, to learn how maple syrup is produced, sample it and partake in a pancake breakfast.
The Camp Lazarus Maple Syrup Festival has been a tradition for 30 years, said Cassie Ferguson, marketing director for the Scouts' Simon Kenton Council. About 5,000 pancakes are served during the two-day event. “We open it to the public,” she said. “It has a nice public education piece on how maple syrup is made.”
The event, held on two consecutive Saturdays, typically attracts 400 to 500 visitors each day, according to Ferguson. Visitors can walk the property and see how volunteers use taps and buckets to draw the sap from the maple trees. The liquid is taken to the Adams Mullins Sugar Shack and boiled down into maple syrup. “It's a live demonstration that's very interactive, with a lot of explanation,” Ferguson said.
Typically, more than 1,000 trees are tapped each year. If production is good, visitors will be able to buy syrup during the event, she said.
In addition to pancakes and syrup (or a hot dog lunch), the event also includes a variety of outdoor activities, such as archery, rope making and BB gun shooting, Ferguson said. Children do not have to be Scouts to try these activities, she said. “It's a taste of scouting life, if you're not in scouting.”
