Columbus Clippers: Five specialty salons
In recent years, we've grown accustomed to seeing gluten-free and vegan options on most restaurant menus around town. It was only a matter of time before these movements made their way into the beauty and hair care arenas.
Specialty spas and salons aimed at particular segments of the population are gaining in popularity around town. Whether you are looking for wheat-free, organic, purely plant-based hair care, or someone who specializes in extra-long hair or naturally curly tresses, there's a salon for that. Here is a sampling of Columbus' most unique salon offerings:
Gluten-conscious hair care
Did you know that some hair and beauty products contain wheat protein? It's true. But you won't find those products in Clintonville's Philosophi Salon. Philosophi opened in 2015 to fill a void in the otherwise robust Central Ohio salon market. As more people are diagnosed with varying degrees of wheat and gluten allergies and sensitivities, there's increasing demand for natural hair products that are free of those triggering ingredients.
Philosophi Salon uses gluten-sensitive products in a gluten-sensitive environment, and even requires its hairstylists not to wear creams, lotions, sprays or other products that contain gluten when they are working.

Earth conscious and cruelty free
Since opening in 2010, Virtue has provided environmentally friendly and cruelty free salon services to vegans, vegetarians or anyone who wants to look good without using animal products or by-products. Virtue is vegan to the core - the salon uses and sells products that are botanically based, as well as organic, sulfate-free and paraben-free; serves complimentary vegan-friendly beverages; and even the furniture is free of animal products.
Virtue also recycles pretty much everything - from caps, lids and containers to business cards, shampoo bottles and hair. That's right - all hair clippings are composted and returned to nature.

While it's true any skilled stylist can work with hair of all types and textures, there is no denying that some are better than others at cutting and styling curls. Ambushed, in the Short North, is Ohio's only exclusively curly hair salon.
Unlike other salons, which frequently blow out, iron and chemically straighten wavy locks, Ambushed, which has been around since 2010, offers services like curl shaping, twist outs and color to specifically enhance curls. It also goes without saying that all of the products used at Ambushed are made for curly hair.

Going for length
Do you have long locks that flow all the way down your back? Or are you trying to cultivate that look? Are you worried that telling a stylist "just a trim" will quickly turn into several inches? Rapunzel's has your back. The salon is on a mission to encourage the growth and maintenance of healthy, extra long hair.
Services offered include a "dusting" (trimming the ends of the hair only), detangling, braiding, up dos and more.
779 S High St., Brewery District.
