Things We Love: Picks from Amanda Propaganda

Amanda Propaganda spent the bulk of her teenage years in Dublin, Ohio, talking to English strangers about music in archaic internet chatrooms and scamming rides down to campus record stores. Long before the age of Spotify or eBay, the lifelong Anglophile fueled her addiction to the blossoming 1990s Britpop music scene by scouring import CD sections and leafing through dusty stacks of NME and Melody Maker.

Twenty years later, she has teamed up with fellow genre-enthusiast, John Olexovitch, to create F.E.E.L.I.N.G. C.A.L.L.E.D. W.H.A.T.E.V.E.R., a DJ night showcasing the very best (and lesser known) in '90s-early 2000s music from the U.K.It will kick off at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13,at Cafe Bourbon St. Here are a few things she loves.

Ohio Roller Derby

OK, I am a bit biased here as I have been skating with the league since 2009, but modern flat track derby is an intense, full-contact, DIY sport that too many people still don't know about. I am particularly excited that this year we are bringing back our annual holiday-themed bout, Skatemare Before Christmas. You can catch it Dec. 1 at the Ohio Expo Center. GHOULS RULE!

The Spot Athletics - Grandview

Part of playing competitive roller derby is cross-training, and I've never been great about the whole self-motivation thing at the gym. One of my teammates took me to a powerlifting class at The Spot and I was hooked. The group-based training is top notch and the owner, coaches and other clients are all wonderfully encouraging.

The Memphis garage music festival hosted by Goner Records is now in its 15th year and I never miss it. Every September, I discover loads of great bands and meet rad people from all over the world. I lovingly refer to it as Punk Rock Summer Camp. Some of my favourite Columbus bands from Heel Turn Records will even be there this year for an after party. Bonus: Memphis food!

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra

Aside from Britpop and punk, I have a deep love for orchestral music. Columbus is super lucky to have a world-class orchestra, and I try to attend as many performances as I can. Director Rossen Milanov has really energized the Masterworks lineup and the yearly Russian Winter Festival is not to be missed.

The Art of Kent Grosswiler

Kent's portraits are quirky and stylized yet instantly recognizable. The Noel Gallagher painting he did for me is one of my most-prized possessions.
