The List: Other upstart Columbus businesses the North Market should incubate

Recently, the North Market announced that longtime Bexley bagel maker Block’s would fill the stall vacated by Taste of Belgium, which did not have its lease renewed by the North Market board. In a Columbus Underground report, Taste of Belgium owner Jean-Francois Flechet (a worthy moniker for a maker of Belgian waffles) said the decision was tied to the market’s desire “to focus on incubating new businesses.” Such as Block’s, founded in 1967.

Along those lines, we thought we’d highlight a few more local upstarts the North Market should consider for future openings.

Northstar Cafe

Consistently voted the best burrito in the city by the culturally attuned voters in our Best of Columbus poll, this fledgling local shop deserves a wider audience, and North Market might be the spot where it could finally find one.

City Barbeque

With a name like City Barbeque, one would think the local brisket brokers would have better #brand awareness Columbus-wide. A stall at the city’s premier market could change this.

According to a recent rerun of “Restaurant Impossible,” wings are the most popular carry-out food in the United States, and we envision them “flying” off the shelf once this eatery makes its market debut.

Marco Gutierrez, the co-founder of Latinos for Trump, once said that Democrats wanted “taco trucks on every corner” as a means of fueling an anti-immigrant sentiment among voters, a strategy that proved shortsighted, because taco trucks are awesome. But taco shops on every corner could be the future business plan for Day of the Dead-themed Condado, should it get a needed North Market bump.

Columbus Brewing Company

Beers like the great-but-unheralded Bodhi deserve a wider audience.

Mikey’s Late Night Slice

Who doesn’t love pizza? And we have a feeling locals would gravitate toward this playfully impolite shop, should the North Market facilitate an introduction.

El Vaquero

This Mexican eatery is certain to dominate every publication’s Best of Columbus poll once diners get a taste.

Sure, the North Market already has a sushi stall in Nida’s, but what if you could get your fish even faster?

Thurman Cafe

The Thurman Burger is going to be a thing. You heard it here first.

Unnamed Cameron Mitchell concept

The man just needs a chance.

Unnamed PromoWest venue

A match made in music heaven? The concert promoter has been trying to get a foothold in Columbus for some time, and the North Market could benefit from regular live entertainment. As a bonus, stage sight lines obscured by produce stands and doughnut shops would still be an improvement on those offered in other local rooms such as the Basement.
