It's a good week to get a sense of the full range of CAPA's programming for the Summer Movie Series this year.

Friday, July 24, brings the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. Robert Wise's film about an alien visitor to Earth who warns of dire consequences if humanity keeps up its in-fighting has a quality and timelessness that can't be touched by any misguided remake with Keanu Reeves.

Later that night, CAPA unspools the raunchy 1977 hockey comedy Slap Shot with Paul Newman.

The series continues July 25-26 with 1951's bright Technicolor musical Show Boat, followed July 29-31 by 1971's Dirty Harry, Don Siegel's action-packed introduction to the iconic bad cop played by Clint Eastwood.
