In Liza Johnson's In the Air, screening this month in The Box video space, everything's made a little better by splits and cartwheels, whether it's the stifling atmosphere of a small town or parents who won't stop bickering. It follows young students at a circus school through lives that have little direction and fulfillment outside of it, but who ultimately prevail over gloom with their infectious desire to fly and spin. Johnson, who's currently enrolled in a filmmaking lab at the Sundance Institute, utilized non-professionals actually attending a circus school in Portsmouth, Ohio, for the short. The Box presentation is its world premiere, but In the Air will soon follow Johnson's previous films onto the fest circuit. She's already shown at the New York, Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals.
