Movie review: "Hell Baby" not as funny as the team that birthed it

The writing/directing team behind “Hell Baby” are two funny guys who have a really mixed track record.

Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon are alumni of “The State” and co-creators of “Reno! 911.” They are also noted Hollywood script doctors who have penned such classics as the Lindsay Lohan vehicle “Herbie Fully Loaded.”

Their latest comedy focuses on a young expectant couple (Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb) who move into a run-down New Orleans house to welcome the birth of their baby, whom may be the spawn of Satan.

Terribly uneven, “Hell Baby” isn’t nearly as funny as those involved. Garant and Lennon co-star as priests, and Rob Hbel and Paul Scheer of “Human Giant” reteam as cops. There are only occasional glimpses of the great comedic comedy these teams possess (pun!).

No gag goes unturned, and it’s not until the third act that the silliness finally takes hold. There are laughs waiting there, but it takes far to long to get rolling.

These guys can do better. I hope they get the chance.
