Sony Pictures announced today that it will allow independent theaters to show the previously-yanked comedy "The Interview," and at least two local theaters have announced showings starting on Christmas.

The Gateway Film Center and Grandview Theatre will start showings on Christmas. GFC plans screenings at 8 p.m. daily through Sunday. No word yet on exact times for the Grandview Theatre.

"We built our reputation at Gateway Film Center by bringing movies to audiences who wouldn't normally get to see them," said Chris Hamel, Gateway Film Center president. "Playing a difficult-to-find movie is in line with our mission, and we're happy to have managed to secure "The Interview" and present it to Columbus moviegoers."

David Nedrow of the Grandview Theatre said, "We're glad that Sony has decided to go ahead with a limited release. It would have been a shame if the fear of 'terrorism' began to dictate what films are shown in the U.S."

Studio 35 expressed interest in showing "The Interview" but had a previous commitment to screen "The Hobbit" this week.
