Movie review: Manny Pacquiao documentary filed under amazing-but-true

Brad Keefe, Columbus Alive

One of my favorite things about documentaries is that sometimes they tell stories that are too unbelievable to be real. Yet they are.

Boxer Manny Pacquiao is the opposite of unknown, so the documentary "Manny" lacks the surprise of, say, "Searching for Sugar Man." But his Cinderella rise from poverty in the Philippines to his spot as one of the greatest boxers of all time is still a hell of a story.

It's a real-live "Rocky," of course, but "Manny" is also a pretty intriguing look at Pacquiao's meteoric fame in his home country. It's nothing groundbreaking as a sports doc, but Pacquiao's warm personality and amazing story make it a pretty great one.
