New in theaters:

“Hot Pursuit”

Reese Witherspoon plays an uptight cop trying to protect a drug lord’s widow (Sofia Vergara). It looks a little obvious, but it’s great to have a woman-centric buddy comedy for a change.

“The D Train”

In the week’s other comedy, Jack Black plays the head of a high school reunion committee who is trying to convince a popular classmate (James Marsden) to attend.

“Misery Loves Company”

Comedian Kevin Pollak compiles interviews with more than 50 famous funny folks in this documentary dissection of the serious business of making people laugh.

Limited screenings:

The Gateway Film Center is hosting late-night screenings of Joss Whedon’s pre-“Avengers” big-screen leap from his cult TV show. Stick around Friday for a live edition of comedian Dustin Meadows’ “How Have You Not Seen This?”
