Other new movie releases for May 24
NEW IN THEATERS:
“Superman” meets “The Omen” in this genre mashup, which finds a child crash-landed from space and taken in by a farm couple who eventually breaks bad after he discovers he has alien powers.
According to early reviews, actress Olivia Wilde nails her directorial debut, delivering a charming, raunchy coming-of-age tale anchored by strong leading performances from Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever.
“Pokemon Detective Pikachu”
Despite having a name that sounds like a sneeze when said aloud (try it!), Pikachu is undoubtedly the cutest Pokemon character (so help me God if I get any email for saying this…), making them the ideal starring vehicle for this children's film.
“John Wick 3: Parabellum”
It is never lost on me that this is a series created by former stuntmen. It's a showcase of stunt work and fight choreography with typically just enough plot to glue things together, and this third installment takes the action to giddy levels. (3 stars)
Fans of Tolkien also may be expecting something more fantastic and imaginative, but “Tolkien” finds some fertile ground in its limited narrative. (3 stars)
Part “Beauty and the Beast” rom-com, part political satire, “Long Shot” links a schlubby speech writer (Seth Rogen) with a model-esque presidential candidate (Charlize Theron).
Director David F. Sandberg makes a wildly entertaining romp. It's the superhero film as viewed through the lens of the great kid adventure movies of the '80s, and that's a super fun mix. (4 stars)
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo work from an outstanding script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely that's inventive and unexpected, while also honoring the characters. “Endgame” sticks this landing in ways that are thrilling, funny and emotional. (4 stars)
