Staff Pick: See 'Killer Raccoons! 2!: Dark Christmas in the Dark' at Studio 35
The Columbus-made cult film will screen twice this week: Friday and Wednesday, Dec. 17 and 22
Four years ago, I stood in the backyard of a family home in Bexley and watched Travis Irvine, a filmmaker and former gubernatorial candidate, attempt to stretch infant-sized elf pajamas onto a dead, frozen racoon.
"This is what they look like when they know they're going to die,” Irvine said as he surveyed the dozen-odd raccoon corpses, many of which had their paws raised to their eyes, face twisted into a grimace as if staring directly into the sun.
At that point in time, filming had not yet started on "Killer Raccoons! 2!: Dark Christmas in the Dark," a cult film that will screen twice this week at Studio 35: at 11 p.m. on Friday and Wednesday, Dec. 17 and 22. (Tickets for the Friday screening can be purchased here; click here to buy tickets for Wednesday.)
In 2017, Irvine described the process of working with the thawing critters, who serve as the villains in the movie, as making "a messed up 'Muppet Show,'" though the plot is informed more by action sequels such as "Speed 2" and "Under Siege 2."
Since its release, the film has continued to develop a cult following, taking advantage of the pandemic, where limited screenings and the dearth of competition allowed it to reach No. 13 on the domestic box office charts for the week of July 31-Aug. 2, 2020, according to IMDB records.
In other words, this week is your chance to catch one of the biggest summer films of 2020 on the big screen. Don't miss it.
