On the rise
Jet, the Fratellis, CSS and more have ridden iPod commercials to greater success. Chairlift, who lent the minimal, bass-driven groove and melancholy melody of "Bruises" to a recent spot for new Nanos, may yet join their ranks. "Bruises" presents a lighter side of a band that specializes in weighty melodrama like single "Planet Health." That song's snappy bass and New-Age synths come dangerously close to Enya territory - or bad Peter Gabriel, at least - but Caroline Polachek's vocals demand to be taken seriously; they're the linchpin that keeps Chairlift's sound transcendent rather than transparent. Local freak-folk balladeers Moon High will join them at the Wex.
