Marquee: Gucci Mane & Jim Jones

Seeing Gucci Mane open for Lil Wayne at Veterans Memorial two years ago was one of my least favorite live music experiences.

Crew after crew of local rappers took their shot, each unit's all-power, no-finesse approach coalescing into an avalanche of indiscernible shouts and boasts. At least East Main Street got its proper props.

Gucci's set barely surpassed the local amateurs. At the time, I knew him as the Atlanta hustler behind goofy sex anthem "Freaky Gurl." The rest of his overbearing hour did little to convince me to seek out more Mane.

But Gucci has a huge following in Columbus, so perhaps he has more to offer than he showed in '07. He'll be here Friday with "We Fly High" hitmaker Jim Jones, mere weeks after a recent Columbus stop from Jones' Dipset collaborator-turned-nemesis Cam'ron.
