Marquee: Maxwell

After ascending as one of neo-soul's dominant voices in the '90s, Maxwell has had a quiet decade, with barely a peep since 2001's Now. But he crept back into the public consciousness with a performance at last year's BET Awards, and now he's touring hard in support of BLACKsummers'night, the first in a promised trilogy to be rounded out by blackSUMMERS'night and blacksummers'NIGHT.

Those titles might hint at the self-indulgent pretentiousness that bogged down sophomore release Embrya, but lead single "Pretty Wings" suggests Maxwell is back to expertly toeing the line between artistry and accessibility. A mid-tempo jam built on wind chimes, "Little Wing"-style guitar and staccato horn blasts, it's a welcome addition to Maxwell's canon and an enticing invite to Wednesday's gig.
