Marquee: Harvey Milk

Metal is at its best when it ditches the raven-black monochromatic monotony and shows some peacock feathers. Few bands bear that burden like the pair of Georgia groups that's playing Sunday.

Within the first track of Harvey Milk's Life ... The Best Game In Town, the Athens band dabbles in serene melodic meditation, sludgy rage riffage, skronking noise experiments and classic rock homage. "Death Goes to the Winner," among the most accomplished and engaging metal songs you'll hear, is only the beginning of the splendor.

Their Atlanta compatriots Torche take a poppier tack, embedding glistening shoegaze sonics and clear-cut melodies into their blistering low-end charge. It's a hybrid as efficient as any you'll find at your local dealership.
