Marquee: Built to Spill

After the five-year crawl between 2001's Ancient Melodies of the Future and 2006's You in Reverse, the three-year wait for Built to Spill's forthcoming There Is No Enemy feels downright brisk.

That might not be the best descriptor for the music, though, as the record finds Doug Martsch and band filtering the sort of murky melancholy that characterized 1997 opus Perfect From Now On through the startlingly straightforward framework of the band's 21st-century works.

It's indie rock's equivalent of microwaved leftovers from a master chef.

So show up at the Newport next Thursday ready to shout requests for Built to Spill tunes from a brighter day, when Martsch and his Idaho posse were making some of the most visionary guitar rock of their time.
