By recording and touring the world, Israeli singer-songwriter Yasmin Levy is doing more than sharing her culture with world music lovers; she's working to keep parts of that culture from dying out. Inspired by her father, a composer and cantor who collected songs passed down orally to the descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews over five centuries, Levy sings in the Ladino language of her ancestors. It's nearly extinct as a form of communication, but in song, combined with contemporary influences of flamenco and Turkish music, Levy gives it a fresh, forceful new life. See her perform tonight at the Lincoln Theatre.
