Marquee: Greensky Bluegrass at A&R Music Bar

As a bluegrass novice, I enjoyed Greensky Bluegrass' latest, Five Interstates, way more than I figured I'd enjoy the genre. Fans of the Punch Brothers' classically trained take on bluegrass will appreciate "Ryder's Song," but Greensky usually surges in the other direction, toward outright pop music in the most straightforward sense possible.

Of course, this being bluegrass, the band brings plenty of chops to the table, but the finger-plucking rarely steals the spotlight. This Michigan quintet is more about warm voices telling stories in tightly constructed tunes, and they do it mighty well.

They'll bring their live show, which earned them top honors at the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, to A&R Music Bar next Thursday.
