In the fall of 2008, Relay Recording owner Jon Fintel was feeling charitable. So he called up his pal Erin Moore from the Columbus Music Co-op to figure out a way to use his skills for a good cause.

The result was Columbus Music Co-op & Relay Recording Local Music Compilation Volume 1, an 11-track compendium that features well-known local standbys next to less-established high school- and college-aged acts, all recorded for free at Relay when Fintel could find time between paying clients.

The album will be available for $5 at all Columbus Music Co-op events, including a pair of release shows - an adults-only rock show Friday at Carabar and an acoustic matinee Feb. 28 at the North Market's Dispatch Kitchen. Proceeds benefit the co-op's Columbus Musicians' Assistance Program, which pays medical costs for musicians without health insurance.

Besides funding the co-op's charity, the project fits with the organization's mission of advocating this city's sounds.

"As a music nonprofit, it was really important to put out some music," Moore said.

They were especially excited about exposing unknown up-and-comers.

"We wanted to include young people who haven't had a chance to put anything out and put that with experienced musicians," Fintel said.

Along with solo artists Jordan Martin, Dylan Kappler and Ben Schwabe, the youth movement includes Shin Tower Music, an experimental electronic act that's gained quite a bit of recognition since they came into Relay last summer to record their track. Alive honored them as a Band to Watch last month.

"Shin Tower kind of is playing varsity now," Fintel said, "and they started as JV."

Bookmobile, Time & Temperature, The Lindsay, Jinx Palm, Dolby F---ers, Flotation Walls and Deadsea round out the tracklist.
