Music: Woody Pines at Thirsty Ear

Columbus Alive

During his two-year stint in Columbus, traveling musician Jonathan Woods came into his own under the guise Woody Pines at modest gigs like the Thirsty Ear's open-mic night. Gradually, he added players to his brew of ragtime, country blues and old-time jazz, and soon the band had become a nearly constant touring fixture. Though he's now based in Asheville, Woods still blows through town quite a bit, and Friday he and the band will be back where it all began, at the Thirsty Ear. They're touring in support of their latest, "Counting Alligators." It's a pleasantly perplexing and ultimately satisfying set that often sounds straight out of a Southern speakeasy but at times ("Satisfied") seems haunted by more modern ghosts.

When: 9 p.m. Friday, March 5
