K'naan and Wale at the Newport

Staff Writer
Columbus Alive

K'naan is a Somalia-born, Canada-bred refugee rapper just as likely to break out a guitar and break into song as to rap over Afrobeat-inspired rhythms. Look no further than the dual rallying cries "Wavin' Flag" and "T.I.A." for a taste of his M.O. Wale is a D.C. native born to Nigerian parents, a clever cat whose pop-culture savvy has him naming a song "90210" and recording an entire "Seinfeld"-themed mixtape. 2009 was a breakout year for both emcees; now they've teamed to hit the road in support of respective debuts "Troubadour" and "Attention Deficit." Fugees associate John Forte and locals The 3rd will perform too.
