Maps and Atlases at the Basement
Maps and Atlases play math rock, but unlike most of their time-signature-obsessed peers, their music feels warm, approachable and deeply personal. There will be no detached wanking or formulaic faux epics Sunday at The Basement.
Rather, this Chicago quartet's jazzy indie pop is powerful because it's playful. Folksy harmonized vocals also contribute to the feeling, as do a rich array of background sounds. Think Brian Wilson fronting indie-prog combo Aloha with occasional dips into more boisterous realms, and you're on the right path.
Drink Up Buttercup and Solid Gold round out Sunday's bill.
