Marquee: Curren$y at Skully's

Throughout his decade-long rise from teen phenom to cult favorite, Curren$y accumulated affiliations with the rap royalty of his native New Orleans.

For a while, he rolled with No Limit, but his nimble flow didn't jibe with the Master P's larger-than-thug-life empire. Then he threw his lot in with Lil Wayne's Young Money, but eventually they cut ties too. It's for the best; Curren$y's not quite quirky enough for that crew.

Rather, last year's official debut "This Ain't No Mixtape" showcased a rapper reminiscent of Q-Tip - clever, slightly soft-spoken and always in control.

Curren$y's skills earned him a part of rap supergroup Center Edge Territory with Mos Def, Jay Electronica and Mansfield native Stalley. And they ought to entice rap fans to Skully's Friday, where the 3rd, Byrd and Poitier Pockets will open the show.

When: 9 p.m. Friday, April 16

Where: Skully's Music Diner, Short North
