Black Blondie at Carabar

Black Blondie is an R&B band in that the Minneapolis quartet builds urban jams around leading lady Samahra's sultry soul swoons. But little about this Minneapolis quartet goes according to script, whether that's the modern-day Power 107 script or the retro-fetish Amy Winehouse version.

Last year's debut "Do You Remember Who You Wanted To Be" is accessible yet experimental, with spooky, disorienting production locked in place by sturdy hooks and steady grooves. Imagine John Cage and Lauryn Hill remaking DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" and you've got some idea of what a wonderfully weird anomaly this band is.

They'll play Carabar next Wednesday with local rap mainstays Envelope and Dominique LaRue.

When: 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 12

Where: Carabar, Olde Towne East
