Locals Only: Trailer Park Ninjas

The acoustic party band Trailer Park Ninjas has carved out a steady living playing cover tunes around Ohio, but it would be an understatement to call their latest excursion a step up.

The Columbus trio played nightly on VH1's Best Cruise Ever, a voyage from Tampa to the Grand Caymans and back featuring bands such as Three Doors Down, Lifehouse and Shinedown.

After the big names swabbed the decks and rocked the ship's theaters, the Ninjas played in the casino nightly from the ship's Thursday departure to its Monday return, belting out well-known hits (and a few originals) until last call.

Sets included "everything from Johnny Cash to the Black Eyed Peas and everything in between," singer Bobby Huffman said.

By trip's end, cruisers were singing along with Trailer Park originals and recognizing the band members on deck. They gained 1,000 new Facebook fans through the experience - a nationwide audience for their debut EP later this year. And more cruise gigs are forthcoming.

"This was like the biggest gig of our life," Huffman said, "and it went over just about as good as we could have hoped for."
