Smashing Pumpkins at the Newport

Last time Smashing Pumpkins played the Newport, on Halloween 2008, what was promised as a special acoustic engagement featured Billy Corgan strumming away at "Hang On Sloopy," "Monster Mash" and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" for an audience that probably just wanted to hear "Disarm." Then the band returned for a set heavy on tunes from the awful "Zeitgeist."

This tour, which features an entirely different lineup behind Corgan, seems destined to be more of a crowd-pleaser - at least judging by an opening-night setlist that read more like a satisfying career overview than another exercise in frustration.

Fellow Chicagoans Kill Hannah and Bad City will support the alt-rock legends in a sold-out Friday show.
