Darius Rucker at the Ohio State Fair

Considering the down-home frat boy aesthetic Hootie and the Blowfish exemplified, frontman Darius Rucker's new career in country music isn't a far cry. But it's still weird to see Rucker singing the kind of assembly-line sad-sack ballads that balance out country's more animated and unruly characters.

Perhaps the bulk of Rucker's country crowd wasn't paying attention to Rucker's activities circa 1994, though that seems impossible considering the relentless ubiquity of "Only Wanna Be With You" and similar jams. Still, strange or not, Nashvillians have embraced him as their own, which makes him the perfect fit for the fair.
