Jimmy Eat World at the Newport

The acoustic strums and bro-friendly vocals that open Jimmy Eat World's comeback album "Invented" bear little resemblance to the band that birthed emo milestones like "Lucky Denver Mint" and "A Sunday" at the tail end of the '90s.

In fact, "Invented" barely even resembles the scrubbed and polished version of the band that broke through to radio super-saturation a couple of years later.

We don't like to poo-poo artistic evolution, but we're not sure that's a worthy descriptor for this faceless mess of a new record. We prefer the old Jimmy Eat World and hope they spend most of their show Saturday at the Newport delving into the past.

Scotland's tremendous We Were Promised Jetpacks are set to open.
