Staff Pick: Freelance Whales

If I was in a band, I’d want it to be like Freelance Whales.

Having honed its mellow, occasionally sugary sound on subway platforms, the Queens-based band creates indie-movie-soundtrack-ready harmonies and toys with unusual instrumentation: The lead singer plays both the banjo and synth, one guy rocks out on a glockenspiel and there are guest appearances by a harmonium.

Unlike some bands with similarly chill aesthetics, Freelance Whales won’t sedate you live. On stage, they’re a merry bunch that selflessly places a high priority on keeping the audience happy.

So, anyone want to start a band?
