Cold War Kids at the Newport

For album No. 3, Nathan Willett has tamed the deranged nasal howl that made Cold War Kids so obnoxious before. Unfortunately, "Mine Is Yours" seems to have thrown out much of the rest of what made the band distinctive along with Willett's aggravating squawk.

It's not entirely worthless music. They clearly put thought into deploying their instruments in sharp and unexpected ways, resulting in rich arrangements a careful ear could dissect for days.

But zooming out reveals their ingenuity is applied to anthems-by-numbers that indicate these guys (a) think U2 is still putting out strong work these days and (b) cross their fingers hoping each new Radiohead album will herald a return to the sound of "The Bends."

Apparently many folks share their sentiment because Wednesday's show was upgraded from the Newport to the LC.
