Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears at the Newport

Black Joe Lewis has always claimed the Honeybears is a blues-rock band, but their spine-tingling soul blasts say otherwise. Latest album "Scandalous" wastes little time making Lewis' case.
"I'm Gonna Leave You" simmers with a swagger befitting Buddy Guy. "Messin'" is gnarly acoustic blues straight from the crossroads.
"Scandalous" offers plenty of twist-and-shout-worthy rock 'n' soul too, with call-and-response choruses and brass blasts galore.
They'll add a little country to the mix Friday at Newport when Those Darlins open the show.
