Old 97's at the Newport
The latest album by alt-country pioneers Old 97's delivers the band's signature twangy take on up-tempo pop rock and country backbeats, but "The Grand Theater: Volume One" also includes something a little different: a reimagination of classic Bob Dylan. With a sense of humor.
The melody from Dylan's epic "Desolation Row" now tells the tale of being stuck in the purgatory in central Illinois. "You will not go to heaven/ You'll go to Champaign, Illinois," Rhett Miller sings matter-of-factly. Dylan himself gave the fun little song his personal thumbs up.
Miller will whip his hair back and forth - he usually does at songs' climaxes - when the Old 97's play Tuesday at the Newport.
