Franz Nicolay at the Treehouse

It's never a good sign when you're known more for your mustache than your music. Then again, wearing a mustache pretty much ensures you'll be known for wearing a mustache. Fortunately, former Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay does make music of note (and not just music of notes, which anyone can do).

Nicolay's recent solo album "Luck and Courage" is a surprisingly singer-songwriter-y affair, punk and folk-rock far less exotic than you'd expect from a member of Anti-Social Music and The World/Inferno Friendship Society. It seems playing all those all-American Hold Steady laments left an impression.

Fellow weary traveler David Dondero will join Nicolay on Monday at The Treehouse. Columbus musician Max Sollisch's solo project Dolfish, which recently signed to Afternoon Records, will open.
