Local music: Matte Black Silhouettes

In my Matte Black Silhouettes concert review from January, I accused the band of mimicking the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Debut EP "Extended Play" doesn't do much to change that impression, but it proves that regardless of originality concerns, they're becoming experts in the art of back-alley treble rock.

"Extended Play" sounds amazing. Producer Mike Folker made every instrument into a pulverizing echo; the music hits so hard that you never miss the bass. As for the songwriting: The riffs are raunchy, the melodies bold. There's potential for this bunch if they ever establish an identity of their own.

Fellow garage-pop combos The George Elliot Underground, Glow Merchants and The Eric Stein will play the release party Friday at Ravari Room.
