Mercury on the rise can only mean summer festival season is around the corner. And indeed, things kick off this very weekend with Coachella in Indio, California. (If you hurry, you can still hop on a plane to the desert and scalp your way in.)

Here's a guide to notable events across the country and around the region.

When: April 15-17

Where: Empire Polo Club; Indio, California

Headliners: Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, The Strokes

Price: Sold out

Hippies or hipsters: Hipsters, decidedly so.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

When: April 29-May 1, May 5-8

Where: New Orleans

Headliners: Arcade Fire, Bon Jovi, Jimmy Buffett, Kid Rock, Trombone Shorty

Price: $45 per weekend

Hippies or hipsters: Neither. Despite the emphasis on jazz and New Orleans music, this manages to exude both the most diversity and the most mainstream appeal.

Nelsonville Music Festival

When: May 13-15

Where: Robbins Crossing, Nelsonville

Headliners: The Flaming Lips, George Jones, Neko Case

Price: $70

Hippies or hipsters: A little of both, though the location might tip the balance toward hippies.

Rock on the Range

When: May 21-22

Where: Crew Stadium, Columbus

Headliners: A Perfect Circle, Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Disturbed

Price: $129.50 for field general admission, $99.50 for stadium general admission

Hippies or hipsters: Neither. This crowd would pulverize such weaklings.

When: May 27-30

Where: The Gorge; George, Washington

Headliners: Foo Fighters, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Wilco

Price: Tickets are no longer available

Hippies or hipsters: Definitely hipsters.

Summer Camp

Headliners: moe., Umphrey's McGee, Widespread Panic, STS9

Price: $165

Hippies or hipsters: Hippies all the way.

When: June 2-5

Where: Mulberry Mountain; Ozark, Arkansas

Headliners: My Morning Jacket, Ben Harper, Thievery Corporation, STS9

Hippies or hipsters: The hippest of the hippies.

When: June 9-12

Where: Manchester, Tennessee

Headliners: Eminem, Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, The Black Keys

Price: $249.50

Hippies or hipsters: Though it used to be the definitive hippie fest, Bonnaroo now skews ever so slightly closer to hipster tastes.

Pitchfork Music Festival

When: July 15-17

Where: Union Park; Chicago, Illinois

Headliners: Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, TV on the Radio

Price: Weekend passes sold out; one-day passes $45

Hippies or hipsters: Do you even need to ask?
