Lil B at the Newport

In lieu of typing the word "swag" 175 times, allow me to introduce Lil B the Based God: cult hero, Twitter champion, deconstructionist guru. His "Swag Like Ohio" tour hits the Newport on Friday.

At 21 years of age, the rapper born Brandon McCartney has ascended from Berkeley hyphy crew The Pack (remember "Vans"?) to become one of the most polarizing figures on the internet. He's done it almost entirely by mastering social media, marshalling a throng of devotees even as hip-hop classicists recoil in horror at his seemingly brain-damaged flow.

Dude created 155 MySpace pages to upload thousands of freestyles. He tweets relentlessly. He posts loads of solipsistic YouTube clips.

B's "cooking dance" inspired fans to wield spatulas and tongs at Coachella, where the decidedly straight emcee baffled the crowd by announcing his next album would be called "I'm Gay" (because "words don't mean s---"). He is the most based rapper alive, whatever based means.

Confused? Local openers Fly.Union, Freaky Franz, Cornelius Jackson, Cashola, Kingpin and Kreg & Dez will lend coherence to your Friday.
