Preview: Wavves and F---ed Up at Skully's

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

Not long into Wavves' new "Life Sux" EP, Nathan Williams announces "I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl" in his usual ultra-hooky fashion. Much of the remaining EP is a reminder that while Williams might not be tight with rock's elder statesmen, he's been buddying up with a different generation of budding rock stars, often with rad results for anyone who digs balls-out pop-punk in gleaming hi-fi.

"Nodding Off," Williams' collaboration with girlfriend Bethany Cosentino's band Best Coast, sounds like the most violently infectious New Pornographers song in more than half a decade. "Destroy," a duet with current touring partners F---ed Up, is suitably belligerent.

Speaking of F---ed Up, they're touring behind "David Comes To Life," a densely layered hardcore rock opera that's nearly impossible to parse. Thankfully, on a co-headlining bill like this there's no way they'll have time to play the whole thing.
