Staff Pick: Lupe Fiasco at the LC

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

When Lupe Fiasco grabbed the spotlight on Kanye West's "Touch the Sky," he seemed like a typical (though unusually talented) backpack rapper. His skateboard-oriented debut single "Kick, Push" did little to dispel that notion.

Five years and a few smash hits later, Lupe seems to have more in common with Flo Rida than Talib Kweli, interpolating Modest Mouse's "Float On" for goofy inspirational single "The Show Goes On."

Don't let that scare you away from his show Wednesday at LC with Chiddy Bang and Sarah Green. Another new single, "Words I Never Said," at least proves he can still rap. His transition to pop rap went a lot smoother than Wale's. And if Lupe's Lollapalooza set from a few years back is any indication (back flips!), the dude knows how to put on a show.
