Preview: Pomegranates at the Basement

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

Few bands genuinely deserve to be called "effervescent," but if ever a band merited the distinction, it's Pomegranates. The Cincinnati foursome has a preternatural knack for melody and mood, channeling a melancholy spirit into buoyant pop songs by way of frenetic energy, ethereal chords and a lifetime pass to the echo chamber.

Their latest release, the surprise outtakes LP "In Your Face Thieves/Chestnut Attic," shows the band can succeed in many modes, but if they're smart they won't veer too far from the kind of invigorating music that makes listeners exclaim, "It breaks my heart, and it blows my mind!"

They'll headline The Basement this Saturday after a set from the Soil & the Sun.
