Preview: Freddie T and the People at Double Happiness
Fred Erskine has been kicking around punk rock dives and DIY basement shows for decades, most notably as a member of Hoover and June of 44. Both bands offered a certain spin on angular post-punk, but as rockers age they tend to mellow out, which is what Erskine's done with Freddie T and the People.
Thankfully, rather than fumble through one of those "mature" impressions of Johnny Cash or Tom Waits that inevitably score rave reviews in Rolling Stone, Erskine has opted to make something like a Fool's Gold album. "People In" is full of spritely Afro-pop, funk and surf-rock sounds that should have Double Happiness in good spirits Saturday.
Hyrrokkin, from Dayton, opens the show.
