Preview: Machine Head at the Newport

Machine Head was here first, but unfortunately for the Oakland metal masters, many folks who grew up watching MTV in the mid-’90s think of Bush’s hockey arena anthem “Machinehead” when that name comes up.

Those of us who were also getting into Metallica at that time should have given their Bay Area neighbors a spin, too. Machine Head’s latest, “Unto the Locust,” hits like a Hammett to the skull, at least when they aren’t conjuring Pantera’s grisly death howl instead.

They’ll lay waste to the Newport this Tuesday after sets from Suicide Silence and Darkest Hour.
