Staff Pick: Pomegranates

Forget that new Shins album. If you’re looking for power-pop that won’t collapse under the gloss, look no further than “Heaven,” the latest offering from Cincinnati’s Pomegranates. By now it goes without saying that these guys will imbue sleek, propulsive grooves with melodies plucked straight from the stratosphere. (And yeah, it sounds a little like James Mercer and company in their spunkier days, with a dash of Flaming Lips for good measure.) Trouble is, you’ll have to wait until June 5 to legally uncover the album’s gleaming, galloping splendor. In the meantime, Pomegranates’ stop at The Basement this Monday should tide you over.
