Top 5 singles released in 2011 only to become Columbus radio hits in 2012

Kudos to anyone who was rocking these songs back in 2011, when they were released to general indifference before building grassroots-style into honest-to-goodness smash hits. If one of these comes on the radio (and they all do, often), there's no chance of me flipping the station. (By the way, it's interesting to see how the white artists stretch across multiple stations while the black artists are confined to "urban" radio.)

(5) Future featuring T.I. - "Magic"

This gets bottom spot on my list mainly because I have trouble distinguishing it from Future's other breakthrough hit, "Tony Montana." But even if they're almost exactly the same song, that one song manages to go exceptionally hard without seeming to exert any effort at all. ("Voila, magic," indeed.) Plus, it's awesome to see T.I. back in fighting form in so many guest spots lately. Speaking of which...

(4) 2 Chainz featuring T.I. - "Spend It (Remix)"

Yet another guest spot from Tip + an almost gallingly simplistic hook ("I'm ridin' around and I'm gettin' it/ It's mine, I spend it") = a starting success from the rapper formerly known as Tity Boi. Seriously, I don't know how we ended up in a world when seemingly every A-List urban radio star is lining up for a 2 Chainz guest spot.

(3) fun. featuring Janelle Monae - "We Are Young"

This has to be the frontrunner for most pervasive single of the year, right? Billboard certainly seems to think so. Look out for my interview the week of their sold-out April 19 gig at LC Pavilion.

(2) Gotye featuring Kimbra - "Somebody That I Used to Know"

Talk about coming out of nowhere! This guy has been touring the world for more than a decade, and his song has been out since last summer, but it wasn't until this winter that he became a mainstay across the radio dial. This track is bound to be a gateway drug into Gotye's extensive catalog.

(1) Kirko Bangz - "Drank In My Cup"

An H-Town anthem we can all get behind (assuming you can reconcile your moral compass with rampant codeine-sipping and a 50 Cent-style sex-over-love priority system). That hook, though! Hoping to see this cross over to the Top 40 crowd, Drake-style.
