Staff pick: Battles at Outland Live

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

When Tyondai Braxton quit Battles because he didn't want to tour, I assumed the Brooklyn experimentalists would sputter and die or perhaps carry on as a shadow of their former glory. Instead they retooled sophomore opus "Gloss Drop," invited guest singers into the fold and surged forward with a renewed sense of purpose. "Gloss Drop" is that rare animal in rock, a technical marvel that isn't merely flexing its skills to cover for lack of songs. Its accompanying remix LP, "Dross Glop," maintains the shine even after another round of ripping it up and starting again.
