While spouses Dave McLaughlin and Sarah Lowry were visiting Rio de Janeiro as part of McLaughlin’s work on a dissertation about Brazilian hip-hop culture, a manhole cover exploded near their apartment, landing them both in the hospital for weeks of intensive burn treatment. The couple benefited from lots of support from kind friends; now they’re looking to make life better for future burn victims with their charity 180 Burn Foundation.

One way they’re raising funds and lifting spirits: The 8 Tracks Series, compilations of previously unreleased original music. Volume 1 (pictured) will be released Thursday at Kobo with a show by Cleveland bands Seafair and Musicians Anonymous Cleveland plus local act Nick D’.
