Preview: Pallbearer at Ace of Cups

Chris DeVille, Columbus Alive

Though the influence of hellish cowboys like the late Dimebag Darrell looms large down South, it ain't all squealing monster truck riffs in the former Confederacy. Some Southern bands prefer the slow churn of doom metal.

For instance, Pallbearer, the Arkansas combo that invades Ace of Cups this Thursday, applies haunting vocals and spiraling guitar harmonies to the glacial proceedings. On their new "Sorrow and Extinction" LP, they prove that doom doesn't have to mean unapproachable molasses, using the genre as a launchpad for new adventures in hi-fi.

Royal Thunder and Before the Eyewall round out the bill.
