Majical Cloudz at Double Happiness
What seemed like a bummer at first (The Soft Moon’s show last November getting postponed) actually turned out to be a blessing for Columbus: Not only is Luis Vasquez bringing his brainy goth-dance throwdown to Double Happiness this Sunday, but now Majical Cloudz is coming along too.
Montreal’s Devon Welsh, the man behind the Majical moniker, recently nabbed some attention for appearing on Grimes’ indie breakout hit, Visions. Grimes’ Claire Boucher appeared on his lovely “Dream World” too, though that track’s DIY-leaning dream pop only scrapes the surface of his sound.
The recent Turns Turns Turns EP positions Welsh as a descendent of both Magnetic Fields crooner Stephin Merritt and K Records’ low-end philosopher Calvin Johnson. Majical Cloudz’ synth-driven indie pop emanates a brooding aura but never an impenetrable forcefield. He’s the kind of sad-sack that welcomes you alongside to find levity in all the melancholy rumination; that his voice is a rich storytelling tool doesn’t hurt either. —Chris DeVille
